My 4th Great Grandfather
The name of Jeremiah's father:  Henry Dickens Sr.; mother:  Uncertain
The name of Jeremiah's wife: Rebeccah Dickens
(the daughter of James Dickens - the brother of Jeremiah's father Henry Dickens Sr.)

Based on Henry's location between 1768 - 1789,  Jeremiah was born in the part of Bute County, NC that became Warren County, NC (there is more evidence to support this).  Prior to marrying Rebeccah in Caswell Co., NC in 1802, Jeremiah explored Tennessee  - and purchased 100 acres of land on "Station Camp Creek" in Sumner County in April of 1798; and thus, Jeremiah was likely at least 21 years then (b: about 1776-77). Sometime between 1798 and 1802 Jeremiah went back to NC and married Rebeccah - then returned to Station Camp Creek in Sumner Co., TN by July of 1803 as Jeremiah and his family were living there on that date (See Note #1).  Sometime after 1803, Jeremiah and his family relocated to Jackson Co., TN and resided there until 1817 on land located at "Harvell's Springs".

While the exact date of Jeremiah’s death is not known, based on several court records regarding the “heirs of Jeremiah Dickens” it is known that he died sometime around August 8, 1846. Using the estimated birth year of 1776, and a death date of around 1846, Jeremiah may have been about 69 to 70 +/- years old at his death. [CLICK HERE FOR DEED - Jeremiah Dickens Heirs]

Jeremiah's wife Rebeccah (who's maiden name was also "Dickens") survived him and lived with their son Bryant in 1850 Jackson Co., TN (where she was enumerated as 75) – she obviously died sometime between then and 1860 (when she no longer appears in the census).

Jeremiah and Rebeccah's children were:

  SONS   DAUGHTERS

Bryant
b: 1822, d: 1890

Alsey HARVILLE

b: between 1802-03,   d: After 1880

Fanny SADLER

b: about 1805,   d: Between 1850-60

Charlotte GLOVER

b: between 1805-06,   d: between 1870-80

Martha HARVILLE

b: between 1810-20,   d: Unsure

Mary BRUCE

b: about 1814,   d: between 1852-57

Rachael GENTRY

b: about 1818,   d: 1885

There was an Unidentified daughter/female in Jeremiah's household in 1820; b: between 1810-1815,   d: Unsure - but if she was a daughter, she probably before 1846 as she was not named in the deed for the heirs of Jeremiah Dickens.

NOTE #1:  There is some notable controversy surrounding the land Jeremiah owned on Station Camp Creek in Sumner Co., TN - as follows:

In November of 1801, Sumner County records show that the Legislature had passed a resolution which had identified "the place known by the name of Dickens, now said to be the property of John C. Hamilton, Esq." as one of three possible sights of which one was to be chosen and confiscated in order to erect public buildings - however the confiscation of any of the 3 sights apparently never came to fruition. The other 2 sights were that of: the place of Capt. James Trousdale, and the place of David Shelby. It should be noted that it is unclear if "the place known by the name of Dickens" as discussed in the records was in fact Jeremiah's land or the land of another "Unidentified Dickens".

Furthermore - other Sumner Co., TN records indicate that Jeremiah still owned his land on Station Camp Creek, and may have lived there at least until July of 1803. The complications regarding this matter is that:

  • 1)  Jeremiah may have purchased 2 parcels of land on Station Camp Creek - whereas one of the parcels is not documented in available records (and Jeremiah later sold one of his parcels to John Hamilton by 1801);

  • or 2)  during his absence from TN he had leased his land on Station Camp Creek to John Hamilton;

  • or 3)  when Jeremiah first explored TN, he was accompanied by a brother or another Dicken relative - who had also purchased land on Station Camp Creek around 1798 +/-;

  • if this is so, 4) maybe the land discussed in 1801 Sumner Co., TN records was possibly that of "James Dickens Sr." who like Jeremiah was also from Caswell Co., NC (James Sr. may be a brother of Henry Dickens). This James is known to have left Caswell Co., NC between 1795 - 1799 +/-, eventually settled in Wilson Co., TN where he died about 1807, and he was the known father of Samuel, James Jr., and Lewis (Note: James and Lewis migrated from Wilson Co., TN to Illinois by/before 1830, and lastly - Samuel then migrated to Illinois by/before 1836).
