A Note to "Joseph Dickens" Researchers:

(Joseph was b: 1737, d: 1802 in Halifax County, NC, he was the son of William & Temperance Bennett Dickens; he was the brother of William)

There is a new book making its way to libraries titled: "Order of First Families of North Carolina, Registry of Ancestor's, Vol 1", published 2005, the Author is: "John A. Brayton".

In regards to Joseph Dickens wife "Hannah", the author shows that she was "Hannah Hill" born 1745 - the daughter of Green Hill and Grace Bennett; and that Hannah married Joseph Dickens around 1766. Despite the fact that the author knew that 1) Hannah was NOT identified in Green Hill's will of 1766, and  2) Hannah was NOT identified in the 1772 will of Grace Bennett Hill (wife of Green) - he asserts that the proof of marriage is based on an apparently misfiled deed of Joseph Dickens that was witnessed by Bennett Hill, and because "Two names of Joseph Dickens' children were lifted straight from the Hill family roster:  Bennett and Temperance."

My remarks:

It is clear this author has made a classic mistake - one all of us make from time to time. His data is INCORRECT. The fact is, the Hannah Hill who was the daughter of Green Hill, actually married Ephraim Parham - Nov 1764, the Bondsman was Richard Hill (Green's brother), and Hannah Hill Parham died prior to March of 1767 - the date Ephraim married his second wife Ruth Dunn.

The bottom line is - all of the evidence that I have seen over the years - indicates that Joseph Dickens' wife "Hannah" was indeed exactly who everyone believes she was:

"Hannah  LUNSFORD"
